Medicine in the Highlands....some early views

Kudjip Nazarene Hospital is well designed with 4 separate wards of 3o beds each - Pediatrics, Adult Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics. The wards are spacious and with plenty of windows for a bright open appearance. The outside corridors between the wards and outpatient clinic are covered by overhangs which keep us dry as we go to and fro during rainy season. .....More on the outpatient clinic in a later post.

There is one general surgeon, one pediatrician who is on furlough, and 5 family doctors here. One of the FPs is away for a month and another does mostly administrative work. Also, there is a PNG houseofficer who is here for a year, another here for a month, and an American senior medical student. The American student is Androuw Carrasco who, amazingly, is from Michigan State and who did his first 2 years of med school in Grand Rapids before going to Flint for the last 2 years!

Half of the Medical ward - 15 patients. Note the PNG flag on the back wall!

The nursing station centrally located on the ward. The nursing staff is very good!

Susie and Androuw rounding on Pediatrics

Young boy being treated by Dr. Erin Meier for acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Mama and healthy baby in clinic.

Note the crooked arm! Lots of fractures here. Even David has put on a cast!

Yep, it's broken!!!!
