Baby Elijah-Rejoicing
You have met baby Elijah in a former post. As we prepare to leave ECWA Hospital Egbe I want to share some wonderful news of praise. Baby Elijah was born here Feb 27, 2013 after his mother went into labor 11 weeks before her due date. He came into the world breech-butt first. All 1350 gm
(2# 14 ounces) of him, crying! From the beginning we thought he was a fighter, determined to live! He had some common Premie troubles with infection and elevated bilirubin (jaundice) but did very well. This was a miracle as a Premie this size is vulnerable to many troubles and require meticulous nursing and medical care. We began to feed him mother's breast milk by NG tube on March 3, 2013. We slowly, slowly increased the feeds until he reached the amount of milk that SHOULD have been helping him to grow. Yet, he didn't begin to gain weight and he was still too immature and weak to suck from mama. On March 23 I was able to buy some powdered infant formula from our Big Market day. A concerned nurse taught mama how to mix the formula and she began to offer Elijah
1 ounce of formula by cup and spoon after every breast feed. It is working! By Thursday April 11, he had gained to 3# 10 ounces. Mama and Papa are very happy as Elijah is stronger and now more mature so he is sucking well. I am hopeful that he will "graduate " to home on the same day that we "graduate" to our Michigan home. I am thanking God for Elijah and all that He has in store for Him!
Our work is finished and we look forward to arriving back in Grand Rapids this Sunday afternoon!!!!
