We left Grand Rapids on Friday, Oct 1 at 11:15 AM. After connecting through Chicago and DC, we arrived in Accra, Ghana 21 hours later. The airport here was fairly modern with a nice terminal and a moving luggage conveyor belt. We were delighted to find all 4 of our bags, ech weighing nearly the maximum allowed 50 pounds. We were met by our driver and, along with another couple headed to Togo, loaded our stuff into his large 4 wheel drive SUV. The first half of the 7 hour drive went quickly and smoothly over paved roads. Then, almost to the Togo border, with much warning, we began to travel over narrow dirt roads that were rutted and muddy in places. At one place, we were turned back due to impassable road and had to take a long detour. We arrived at the hospital guesthouse in the dark and they had dinner waiting for us. After that, we went to our room, partially unpacked and got horizontal !!. The next AM (Sunday), we were up early for breakfast and hospital rounds with the 2 fulltime docs here, Michael Gayle is a Family Physician and Russ Ebersole is a Pediatrician. That evening we attended the English church service at the guesthouse where we saw some old friends from our trip here in 2007 and met some new folks.
