Galmi 2019 - Our home for 6 weeks - WELCOME !!


We arrived in Niamey, the capital city of Niger, on October 16 and flew out to Galmi Hospital the next day in the single engine SIM-AIR plane. We were warmly greeted at the dirt airstrip and shown our lodging - Duplex 26. We are fortunate that it is only a 2-3 minute walk to the hospital and we are very near the food "co-op" and vegetable/fruit stand. Our duplex is spartan but has all we need - modest kitchen, living/dining area, bedroom, and bath. We have filtered water from the tap which is great.   .......Life here is good!!!!

Our kitchen has all of the usual appliances including a fridge, gas oven (the propane is from a tank), toaster, microwave, and a hot pot.

Turn 90 degrees to the left and here is our dining table and sitting area which has nice firm cushions and a ceiling fan. This is where we spend much of our spare time reading and puzzling.




Directly off the kitchen is our bedroom.
It has both a ceiling fan and a wall air-
conditioning unit which helps us sleep -
we set it to 25-27 degrees Celsius which
is 77-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Ahhhhhhh!!














Here is the food "co-op" which is our 7-11 or QuikMart. It is open an hour on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and has many of the staples.




At the co-op, we can buy rice, butter, powdered milk, oatmeal, peanut butter, jam, pasta, some canned vegetables, and toilet paper, to name some of the more common items.

Ladies come to our door Monday evening to take our orders for home baked wheat bread, tortillas, and samosas, which are all excellent.






The fruit and vegetable stand is open most days and is just a few steps from our duplex. There is a decent variety of produce which, as vegetarians, we appreciate!!

Some of our dinner fare has included  rice and beans with a bit of shredded cheese, vegetable stir-fry,  pasta with home-made sauce, or omelettes - all of these served with home-made coleslaw.  For breakfasts, we make oatmeal with magic ingredients (raisins and brown sugar) or have toast and yummy home-made yogurt. For lunch we invite Clif and Earl to join us. (Clif Bar and Earl Grey tea!!)
