Under 5s Outpatient Clinic

After inpatient morning rounds, Susie spends her day at this building close to the main hospital. It consists of a large waiting area, pharmacy room, and exam room  that measures 15 by 18 feet or so.

Many mothers come early with their children to wait their turn to be seen. Children that are clearly critically ill are moved to the front of the line. This waiting room is relatively quiet and subdued as African babies with their mommas typically do not cry.

This is the examination room! There are 2 screeners and 2 doctors seeing patients. A Nigerien screener is in the foreground - he can treat the more straightforward cases and sends cases with questions on to the docs, who are at the back of the room. Dr. Drew and Dr. Susie are busy at work! They see many children with malaria, gastroenteritis, pneumonia and malnutrition.

A closer view of Susie in her corner exam area. Her translator Rachel is talking to a momma with child.
