Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home!!!
We have a roof over our heads (we'll never know if it leaks since they only get 4" of rain a year), a small func
tional kitchen, adequate storage (though we store a lot of food in the fridge, freezer, or tight containers due to a population of mice), clean water, a small living/dining area (here, we are about to enjoy a meal of pasta with tomato sauce and red kidney beans, a nice green salad with tomatoes, a bagette, and Susie is holding our daily
doxycycline to help prevent malaria) and a bed with mosquito netting - the first time we've slept under nets.

This is the time of year when vegetables are available. Each day, local folks knock on our door to sell lettuce, tomatoes,
eggplant, carrots, onions, bananas, and stringy inedible green beans from their humble gardens! We've been told to enjoy the veggies now - in a month, they will be hard to come by. For the carnivores, there's frozen ground beef at the small base co-op or you can buy a slab of beef from a fellow who lugs it around on the back of his motorcycle !!!! Yummy !!

As I'm writing an outline of this post, it is Sunday afternoon 1 PM. We're sitting outside the door of our duplex enjoying the 84 degrees and
mild breeze! Cute little 6-10" lizards frequent scurry by us - they seem to be harmless!! So far, we've seen no snakes - a few days ago, Mark the surgeon gave us a nice review of snakebites - in Niger, there are vipers that are fat and nonaggressive and generally only bite if stepped upon and cobras/mambas that are more aggressive. Interestingly, only a minority of bites are associated with injection of venom - antivenom is a horse derived substance that has many side effects so is only used if there is clear clinical evidence of envenomation. We promise to always watch our step and take a flashlight when outside after dark !!!

The Galmi airstrip is right behind our duplex - it is about a half mile long and composed of dirt with packed gravel - a nice, though a bit boring, place to run !!
I listen to Christian music on my Ipod to make the time go by and to help me get in the right frame of mind for the day.

Our first week has passed by quickly and we are enjoying the opportunity to serve at Galmi !! We appreciate your emails, thoughts and most of all, your prayers for our time here.
Love, Dave and Susie
