More scenes from the Newborn Unit

Baby Talen, at 5 days of age, was given a large amount of "herbal" medicine by his grandmother, who thought he was constipated! When he arrived at Kapsowar, he was extremely rigid ("opisthotonic"), unconscious, and had kidney failure with creatinine of 14 and greatly abnormal electrolytes (potassium 7.2 and sodium 166). He was treated with antibiotics and IV fluids, not to mention a lot of prayer! Within 2 days, he was starting to become less stiff and by 10 days, his lab tests were normal (!) and he was able to start breastfeeding. After 3 weeks in the hospital, he finally was discharged - a living miracle! Here he is with his happy mother!!

Brighton was a newborn with severe infection and seizures. He required antibiotics and anticonvulsant medicines. While slow to wake up, by 2 weeks he was feeding, growing, and ready for discharge!

The nurses on the Newborn Unit were
great to work with - they were bright,
caring, and diligent. During our last
week, Susie hosted a goodbye
gathering in appreciation for their
work!
