Karibu! Welcome to Kenya!!

We arrived at Kapsowar Hospital in rural northwest Kenya on October 14 and will be here for about 6 weeks. After landing in the capital of Nairobi, we took a one hour flight to Eldoret, a city of about 500,000 people. From there it was a 1 1/2 hour car ride up to Kapsowar.  Kenya lies due south of the Middle East and we are just a few degrees north of the Equator. The first map shows that Kenya is surrounded by Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania. The second map is a closer-up view - the blue dot is Kapsowar.

We were warmly greeted and shown to our lodging, which we affectionately call the "Blue House".
It has been newly refurbished with a modern kitchen, dining area, living room, and more room than we need.  Solar power is great when there are power outages. We are at 7800 feet above sea level so there is no need for ceiling fans or air conditioners - the temperature usually ranges between 55 degrees and the high 70s - very pleasant. We are not in the rainy season but there is often a brief evening shower -rain water is collected in large cisterns like the one in front of our house.

Kapsowar is in a mountainous area near the famous Rift Valley. As pictures below show, the hills are
filled with crop fields that appear to be quite lush. There are several nearby fruit and vegetable stands with an excellent selection - great news for vegetarians like us!! Wonderful avocados for 20 cents!!!
