Outpatient Department (OPD)

After morning hospital rounds, Dave heads to the OPD, which is right next to the main hospital. This clinic is for primary care of those 6 years and older; Susie takes care of the "under 5s" while surgery and obstetrics are elsewhere. The waiting area is a series of benches that always seem to fill early and many are left standing as they patiently wait to be seen.

The examining room is about 20 by 24 feet  and has stations for 3 screeners and 3 doctors. There are several partitions but nothing even closely resembling privacy except one table surrounded by curtains where we can examine a person lying or do a quick ultrasound. Most exams are done with the patient seated - not ideal but often adequate! Each doc has a translator and each patient usually has at least one person with them so there are often 20 folks crowded into this space. Here, you can see Dr. Kendrick (sitting) and Dr. Josh (standing) at work along with several screeners. It gets pretty hectic and takes a lot of concentration to work here!!!!😊

This 6 year old boy had a mild case of malaria and was able to be treated with pills at home with the medicine CoArtem which is taken for only 3 days with amazing success!! He was losing some front teeth and reminded me of our oldest grandson Dexter!  ......Children this age are often also given a treatment for worms, just in case....

This elderly man had been seen a week earlier for a urinary tract infection and returned just to tell us how pleased he was with his progress!!

This lady has a long history of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure - in English, we abbreviate this CHF but in French, it is IC for "insuffience cardiaque". She said that she had been born at Galmi so she was likely nearly 80 years old!!

This is a beautiful 8 year old girl with malaria - she is the same age as our oldest granddaughter Stella and dressed in the traditional M*slim clothing.
